I also have this problem with a Gateway Solo 9300 that I just purchased off eBay. It is a user password that is set active because it asks for it before it will boot the system. Therefore, any software fix is not an option. It is definetly not a hard drive password because it still asks even wothout a hard drive in the machine.

Someone please help!
