Subject: Can you explain?

This seems like a very dumb question, considering all the hi-tech subjects and lingo on this board, but...I am looking for someone to explain to me..in plain English, how something works. I will get a laptop in the near future to take with me when traveling. I am very interested in the CoPilot GPS software that is available for laptops but do not understand how it works...in other words, how does it connect with the satellite to get the info? What else do I have to have to connect with the internet or connect to the satellite while in the car traveling? I know there is a simple answer but some of us old folks have to be led by the hand! Thanks
