Subject: thinkpad 600e no power up

I bought an in car 12v power adaptor for my 600e i believed i set the correct voltage 16 and the correct polarity negative, when i tried it, smoke from thinkpad and now when i try to power up with the ac adaptor the lights come on for a split sec and then go off and no working tp i later looked at the output from the ac adaptor and this had a positive output polarity so now i figure i have tried to power it with incorrect polarity but i'm not sure. Also i did flick the votage selector to 18v for a short time as it was not working on the 16 setting.Have i destroyed my think pad or can it be repared will a replacement motherboard do the trick

yours
