Well, that depend on the model. I once opened a presario 1210. Start by getting into the laptop itself through the keyboard compartment - (a compaq rule of thumb), after loosening the bottom screws and ejecting with some unscrewing the touchpad compartment. No need to remove the HDD. Next under the LCD status panel which sits beloe the LCD screen U see a small metal latch sticking out towards you. Slide it to the side - U may use a screw driver to aid the sliding/pushing. This releases the LCD status panel which will slides backwards between the stands of the LCD screen. Now U exposed the power cord to the screen latched upon a small pcb board. Unscrew all U can reach there.

If U need to open the LCD screen/monitor itself then uncrew the 2 stands on each end of the laptop. Be careful cuz a ribbon cable still runs from the Laptop's mainboard to the LCD screen panel'chasis. There are 4 tine but round rubber knobs at each corner of the Front. Use some tine driver and scratch it off. This exposes the screws/allen key will open it. I hope this helps you.
