Subject: battery won't charge

I was given a used Dell Latitude CPx as a gift. It has one battery installed in the left bay but it will not charge. The person who gave it to me said he always used it with the AC connection, so it could be that the battery was never engaged. The battery reads 0%charge and it says that it is charging, but it never goes above 0%. Is there a way that I can get this to take a charge, as I don't think it's ever been used.
