Subject: battery troubles

My troubles are with my Gateway 2550 laptop. I purchased a new battery as the old one just stopped working. I charged the new one and when I unplug the cord to run on the battery, the computer shuts down a few seconds later. Not shutting down properly but like the power is lost. Also, if I hit the power on button after this, the computer tries to boot but then cuts out a few seconds later. Any suggestions?
