Subject: CDR101: Drive not ready

I have problems with a gateway solo 9300 laptop.I was told "my girlfriend" deleted the bios password and now nothing works by the owner. I thought it must have more issues then just the bios password so I formatted the hard drive, now I get this error when trying to install WinME or Win98SE: CDR101: Drive not ready reading e: Abort? Retry? Fail? So now I have the CD-Rom problem and the Bios password problem. Any help on either would be greatly appreciated.
