Subject: First Encounters with The Carpenters

I first heard the Carpenters in 1970 when Close To You came out. Though I was only 8 and I didn't really pay much attention to them I was more into the Jackson 5 and Partridge Family. I think the Carpenters were just a little to grown up for me at the time. I heard each song that came out - you just couldn't escape Carpenters in early 70's. By early 1972 one of my school teachers was playing the radio during recess. Hurting Each Other came on. I remember thinking that is a great song. I knew it was Karen singing. Her voice was to recognizeable. That weekend we (my family) were shopping at Sears and I bought the single. Since than I continued to buy all their albums and singles. Now I have every album on CD.

Does anybody else have any interesting first encounters with the Carpenters?

I had never heard the Carpenters until I was 17 years old because I was living in small cities of Dominican Republic, but in the summer of 1972 my family moved to Santiago, the second most important city of my country.
There,every day, after the lunch, I would hear a radio station that played pop music, and it sounded A Song For You.
I changed the station for a moment cause I disliked that song(not now!!!).
But the next single, Yesterday Once More and then Sing, etc., changed the things.
I fell in love with Carpenters forever.....

I first heard The Carpenters in 1971 when we went had dinner at my father's best friend from school. My dad's friend played the "Close To You" album for us and commented that they are both millionaires already. My dad didn't seem to be interested. I recognized the two hits but I, like Boat2Sail, initially didn't recognize the magic. In 1971 I was visiting with a school friend of mine and he played the "Superstar" single for me and of course I knew the song. But then he played the b-side "Bless The Beasts And Children" that's when I was hooked. That song was just so marvelous. A few months later I purchased the "A Song For You" album.
