Subject: Shimano Trinidad

I just saw a Trinidad TN20 today. The Shimano rep was at Bob Sand's in Van Nuys and had one. It has a huge rubber knob on the handle which really looks weird but does give you a good full hand feeling when cranking. However, it is a 6.2:1 gear ratio. I questioned the rep about this since the SL50SH, which has a similar diameter spool and a 6:1 ratio gives absolutely no cranking power.

The rep said that the Trinidad will have plenty of cranking power in spite of that ratio. He attributes it to the cut of the gears and the design of the handle. Well, it could be but I cannot get my mind around that concept. Seems to me the 6+:1 ratio is the limiting factor. Any more technically minded around here that can shed some light? Was the rep's comment valid or just some sales puffery.

The reel looks like a Calcutta on steroids. Pretty gold. Heavy compared to a SL50 or a 545GS. The kicker is the price-- well on the plus side of $300.

I recall that when the Calcutta 200 first appeared at $139 my first impression was: "who will pay that kind of money for that reel". The answer soon became ME! I have several Calcuttas and really like them. So I will not insert foot in mouth this time but I am wondering about this Trinidad.
