A&E's Biography replayed an excellent 2 hour special featuring the Bee Gee's twice last Friday night. There were interviews with the each of them, their spouses, and other influential people workiing in the music business such as George Martin. I didn't realize how popular the group was in the late 60's or how they maintained that popularity outside the U.S. into the 80's, 90's and the present. Though many Americans ran hot and cold towards the group after the disco era, they were one of the few groups if not the only one to hit number 1 on both the singles and the album chart in three consecutive decades in Great Britain. Another interesting piece of information I learned was that the songs used in Saturday Night Fever were written and recorded for the next album before they were ever approached to do the music for the movie. I couldn't believe it when it was stated that they were passed over by the Academy that year for even a nomination for Best Song used in a movie. The movie and it's music defined an era IMO.
