From mks:

The train whistle blew in the distance and Horace Bing looked at his pocket watch. “Right on time,” he smiled to himself.

It was almost nine o’clock in the morning and the town was starting to bustle around. He could hear Robert E banging away and the clatter of dishes at Grace’s. The sound off little children laughing as they ran ahead of their mother’s toward Loren’s. He could see Jake greeting people as they walked past the barbershop. He saw Dr. Mike and Sully pull up to the clinic. Katie jumped out of the wagon and ran across the street to where Samantha was playing with her dolls on the porch of the Nugget.

Horace sighed contentedly. He was happy and it was a good feeling. He remembered the time not so long ago when his world seemed bleak and he didn’t think he could ever feel happy again. He had wanted to end his life and now, thinking back on it as he watched hid daughter and Katie play, he would never have been able to forgive himself if he had succeeded. He would have missed so much. He shook his head, “I woulda missed so much,” he thought as Sam and Katie ran back across the street to the clinic.

“Mornin’ Mr. Bing,” greeted Tyler Thatcher.

“Oh, mornin’ Ty,” answered Horace, coming out of his thoughts. “What can I do for ya?”

“Mr. Bray sent me over. He’s got supplies comin’ in on the train.”

“Well, it should be here any minute. So, ya like workin’ for Loren?”

“Yes sir, I do. I’m real grateful to him an’ the whole town for givin’ me an’ Virgil a second chance,”

Horace nodded, “That’s what this town does son, gives you a second chance at life,” Horace gave a little laugh as he walked back into the post office. How true that was. So many people in this town found a second chance at life, the Reverend, Dorothy, Robert E, Grace, Myra, Sully, Dr. Mike, Jake, himself, and hell, even Hank had found the support that Colorado Springs gave so freely.

The train whistle blew again as the big engine rumbled into the station. Horace watched the people disembark and noticed two finely dressed gentlemen make their way over to his window.

“Excuse me?” asked the older of the two.

“Can I help ya?” asked Horace.

“Yes, my name is Josiah Tubbs. I’m the circuit court judge and this is Samuel Walker, the prosecuting attorney. Could you tell us where to find Matthew Cooper’s office?”

“Well sure thing. Ya see that buildin’ over yonder, the one with the green sign?”

“Yes,” said Mr. Tubbs, looking in the direction where Horace was pointing.

“That’s the medical clinic. Matthew’s ma, Dr. Michaela Quinn, runs it. Matthew’s office is in that buildin’. I ain’ seen him yet this mornin’ though, ya see his wife jus’ had a baby and I ain’ sure if Matthew’s gonna be in town today. Ya can ask his ma though, I’m sure she’ll tell ya.”

Mr. Tubbs nodded, “Thank you,”

Horace smiled, “Yer welcome. Say, are the two of ya here for the Thatcher trial?” Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ty listening with a nervous expression on his face.

“Not that it’s any of your business, yes we are,” said Mr. Walker picking up his valise and walking off towards the clinic.

Horace raised his eyebrows in surprise to the man’s tone and he looked at the judge, “They’re good kids Judge, just got dealt a bad hand,”

The judge gave an expression that was a cross between a smile and a frown and nodded at Horace. He picked up his own valise and walked off to join Mr. Walker.

Ty walked over and looked at Horace. The expression on the boys face reminded him of one of the few times he’d gone hunting and saw the wide eyes of a deer when it knew it’s life was about to be taken.

“Don’ you worry Ty. Matthew’s gonna get you an’ yer brother off, I jus’ know it,” Horace said with confidence.

“I hope so Mr. Bing, I sure hope so, “ whispered Ty as he watched the two men that held his life in their hands walk to the clinic.

“Samuel, I know that you’d much rather be prosecuting in a big city but you’re not. You better change your attitude pretty darn quick. The people in these small towns are very close knit and if you talk to them the way you did to the telegraph operator, you’ll find your welcome here not to be a very friendly one.”

“With all due respect sir, I’m here just to do my job, not to get to know these, these ruffians. The quicker we start this trial, the better. It’s an open and shut case and I don’t see why we need bother with a trial. I hear that the defense attorney never even attended law school!”

“Neither did President Lincoln and need I remind you Mr. Walker that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. There is a story behind everything and that is why we are here. This is not just another stop on your way to bigger and better things Samuel. Two young men’s lives are depending on this trial so no sir, this is not an open and shut case,” said Mr. Tubbs, his voice raising slightly.

Samuel Walker just looked straight ahead, seemingly unaffected by Judge Tubbs speech.

As they drew closer to the clinic, they saw a man out front unloading the wagon. Samuel had never seen a man quite like this one; he had long brown hair and was wearing buckskins. “No doubt an Indian lover,” he thought, wrinkling his nose in distaste.

“Mornin’” greeted Sully as the two men stopped in front of him.

“Good morning,” replied Judge Tubbs. “Is Mr. Cooper in his office?”

“Ah, no, I’m sorry, he’s not. He prob’ly won’ be in town today, is there somethin’ I can help ya with?”

“I’m Judge Josiah Tubbs,” he said extending his hand towards Sully.

Sully looked at the man in a new light, “I’m Sully,” he said, taking the Judge’s hand.

“Sully, I need that basket with the bedding-“ Michaela started but stopped short as she looked at the two finely dressed men standing next to Sully.

“Michaela, this is Judge Tubbs and this is…” Sully trailed off waiting for the other man to introduce himself.

“Samuel Walker, the prosecuting attorney,” he said crisply and grudgingly stuck out his hand.

Sully took it and shook it giving Michaela a quick, amused look. The man looked like he wanted to nothing more than to wash his hands.

“This is my wife, Dr. Quinn,” Sully said, introducing Michaela.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” said Judge Tubbs, shaking her hand.
Samuel merely nodded in her general direction.

“They’re here ta see Matthew,” Sully explained.

“Oh, well, oh, his wife Anne just had their first baby early yesterday morning. I don’t think that Matthew will make it into town today, you see, it was a difficult labor and Anne shouldn’t be left alone.”

“That’s quite understandable. Perhaps you could direct us to his house?” asked Judge Tubbs.

“I’ll show ya where their house his,” said Sully, already untying his horse from the back of the wagon. “Ah, we can go over to Robert E’s and borrow a couple of horses or if ya’d rather, we can get a surrey.”

“Horses will be just fine,”

Sully gave a slight smile and a nod. He led them over to Robert E’s, got two horses and set of to Matthew’s.
