Subject: Stories feedback: you're not alone!
In reply to: Sylvie (The Fanfic Freak) 's message, "DQFAN: please read!" on 17:56:55 06/16/03 Mon

Hi,
*Before all*: a WARNING for all those of you who'd want to read this but have not read DQfan's trilogy yet. Some parts of this message contain a lot of spoilers and I wouldn't want to steal your pleasure when you'll discover these brilliant stories. So, please follow this advice: read them first, and come back to this msg later!

=== And now some rant for DQfan:
Below is what I wished to say to you, further to the recent msg you left on Debby K's forum, about Ghosts prompting " much less feedback than the first two (you) wrote". You "feared (you) had done all that work for nothing"... well, you're WRONG!

Some of you amongst the DQ fandom community know me as "the one who compiled the fanfic list". You write that "the fan base is waning" but there's still many new stories published; I must update my list every month (http://www.drquinnmd.com/drquinn/fanfic.html). New young authors appear regularly, which certainly also means new fans who've just discovered the show with the Hallmark reruns or whatever. So I don't think I'd agree with this remark. Today on Tiffany Miller's forum they had messages from people aged 14 and 15; I will turn 46 in two months, Deb K is in her 50's,... This audience is wide and varied (though still mostly female). I think the development of Internet has also played a huge part; some fans who get in touch with me about my list live in Bulgaria, Israel, Sweden,... and these are all *fan fiction* addicts, which obviously means they're big fans of the *show* before all.

So, why do I like your stories so much?
Of course I've read about all Quinnfic ever published on the web, present or past. My main list contains more than 500 different stories, and even after having read almost all of them, your trilogy is still part of my Top 10. A performance, when you consider that it's not even "100% pure Quinn" stuff! Actually I had read the first two without even *knowing* these were Higher Ground crossovers. This series (HG) has NEVER been shown in France, so I did not bother to look for further info about it on the Internet, cos it'd have left me very frustrated to read an ep guide, for example, without being able to watch any. Then a few months ago, I wrote a short summary of AJH/StW for a fan who wanted some advice about "which good fanfics should (she) read?", added an enthusiastic review, and said these were part of my Top 10. She wrote back saying that these "modern characters" I'd mentioned were actually the heroes of HG!

What first attracted me towards AJH was your idea about our DQ view of the "Colorado Springs historical district" being preserved as a museum. I've always enjoyed stories which mix the past, present & future - I'm also a big fan of all stuff related to time travel. And being able to "go back to this time and place" though it of course never really existed as such, is a very enthralling fantasy in which I'm certainly not the only Quinnaddict to have dwelt upon for many hours. Then, what really hooked me forever was the way you describe Peter & Sophie's moments in the old homestead (I'll quote here what I'd written to a DQ penfriend about this: "Such a scene might just be 'the ultimate fantasy' for any DQ fan"), their "encounters" with the past and, last but not least, the way you had Mike & Sully wipe out the "till death do us part" part from their marriage vows. They're *still* together, they're still madly in love after more than a whole century, and they help their grandchildren so they can build the same kind of happy life they once had. Just wonderful!

I didn't know that you intended to write another story after Peter & Soph's marriage, I thought it was all over with a "happily ever after" to be imagined by ourselves. So, when "Ghosts" was published I was very happy cos I expected the same quality and the same emotions. And I was NOT disappointed!

Considering what we know of our dear old Hank Lawson, this new character Ivy you created is 100% plausible. But I'd rather say the whole 3 stories are plausible - even with all these new contemporary developments you've never deviated from the "DQ dogma". I'm sure that the Sullys and the Lawsons WOULD finally have come to terms with each other, I'm sure Hank could have actually offered this locket to Katie for her birthday... This 3rd story is a real rollercoaster: it never stops shaking our senses and our nerves. I'm glad I waited for its completion before starting to read it! I resisted the urge to read each chapter right after you uploaded it, cos I did not want to be stuck with some unbearable nail-biting cliffhanger and having to wait even just one day till the next part. *I* *LOVED* *IT*.

Besides, I would ALSO like to thank you for the obvious respect you show for your readers. You publish chapters regularly, you've never abandoned an uncompleted story... and you know that yr word processing program includes a spellcheck feature! I don't remember having noticed any remaining spelling Miss Steaks throughout your whole trilogy, whereas in many other Quinnfics, if I'd received a 500-euro banknote for every occurrence of "Brain" for Brian, "Micheala" for Michaela or "Mathew" for Matthew (should I mention my two personal favorites?... "she took a peace of paper" and "taking car of the babies"), today I'd be more wealthy than Bill Gates...

So... you wanted feedback, I hope this will enlighten your day. Should we expect more "P&S + S&M" adventures? Cos I'll never get tired of them! Thanks for sharing your talent with us, but please don't stop here: may the Trilogy become a Tetralogy - or more... but I don't know the word for five - even in French! ;-)

I'll now return to my fanfic list updates for July.... For those of you here who follow this list each month: there should be *at least* NINE new stories. Told you: the Dr Quinn fandom is alive and well and living on the Internet!
