I'm not familiar with macintosh...or much with computers in general. My mom's friend gave her an old iMac w/ OS 9.1 to have. How do I go about cleaning it up, checking for errors, and having it run smooth, etc. Already it froze on me twice and I had to unplug it. She wants to email and web surf a bit is all. Where do I start?

You can try the following;

1) Zap the PRAM by holding down Option-Apple-P-R keys at startup until you here the 2nd 'boing'.

2) then rebuild the desktop file by holding down Option- Apple keys at startup until the message about rebuilding desktop file appear.

3) Trash the following files which are found in the Preferences folder in the System folder - Finder, System & MacOS.

4) If that still doesn't help - do a fresh install with the Restore disks that came with the iMac - half an hour is all it would take.

If you want to use internet,

1. go to the Remote Acess file (can be found in the Control Panels folder) and open it

2. In Remote Access file, enter user name, password and internet dialup number

3. Click Connect to get online
4. Find Internet Explorer and double click it

That's it!
