Subject: I just got my first Mac: an iMac 233

Hi. I'm new here (obviously). I just bought my first Mac on eBay a week ago. I got an iMac 233 with an upgraded 40GB hard drive and 160MB RAM. It still has a 233MHZ processor in it, though. I've been looking online for awhile now for an inexpensive processor upgrade, and out of the ones I can find, the fastest is 500MHZ and they all cost more than I paid for the computer itself. I figure it may not be worth upgrading, but I would like to ask you all if anyone knows how smoothly my Mac will run OS 8.1 (or higher, if possible) on just a 233MHZ processor. Will it be too slow, or will it be at least bearable? Please help, if you can.

Oh, and I haven't gotten it in the mail yet, that's why I'm asking.

"Will it be too slow, or will it be at least bearable?" My question to you is, relative to what? What is fast to you may not be fast enough to some people. So the question is perhaps better phrased as "will it be too slow for my purpose"? And to that I'd ask, what would you like to do with your computer?

If you're just a casual user, or just shy of a tourist, and have never touched a Pentium 4 PC, then no, 233MHz G3 will do you just fine. It will be sufficient to run such menial tasks as email, web surfing, spreadsheet, word processing, even some 3D games. You might also find to your great delight that you can edit small, bigger than postage stamp sized Quicktime movies. And these will play back quite smoothly on the iMac. Bear in mind that when the first G3 PowerMacs first came out in the 90s, they ran for USD1999, and were used by graphic studios. Therefore, as a home computer, I'd imagine that iMac should serve you well.

However, if you intend to run more modern and robust applications, then you should definitely look into a G4 upgrade as early as possible. Most, if not all processor upgrade makers have dropped their line of G3/G4 upgrades for your Rev. A version of iMac. So you'd be extremely lucky to even find one on eBay. Here's one that you might want to consider--

There is another processor upgrade put out by Sonnet that adds a Firewire port to your iMac.

Firewire connection is invaluable for connecting external devices, such as faster hard disk, CD recorder, scanner, and even digital video camcorder.

Granted, these processors do cost more than a Rev.A to Rev.D iMac these days. But let's face it, you are catching the tailwind of something great. At their prime, these iMacs cost USD1299. Bookmark this page to learn more about your machine.

Whatever you decide, the iMac should serve as a great intro into the world of Macintosh. Welcome aboard.

My PC at home has a 500Mhz processor, so that's what I'm used to.

I'd like to use my iMac for mainly suring the internet, typing up papers, website editing, and downloading and listening to music on iTunes (if possible). Will that be too much for the iMac?

Your iMac will run OSX.2 smoothly. I had no problems running OSX on my beige G3 233mhz provided you have sufficient RAM.
