I disagree with the expansion of the airport and the piecemeal manner in which it is being done.
They have a 24 hour licence which obviously will allow night flights.
The decision by the Royal mail to not use rail transport any more could lead to mail planes from the airport and these would travel at night.
The noise from the planes on landing is very loud and will affect people more in the summer with windows open at night time.
A few extra flights is mentioned above. With the numbers of people hoped to use the airport rising to 300,000 in a few years this is going to be more than a few extra flights plus the extra traffic through Dunvant, Killay and Upper Killay.
This would lead to a possible link road through Three Crosses affecting that community.
Property prices will be affected negatively with the increased air traffic plus increased atmospheric and noise pollution.
Presently Air Wales have not published a business plan so that local comunities can see the whole picture.
There has not been an independant environmental impact assessment done.
The real numbers of passengers have not been revealed for their flights. I know for a fact that one flight to London a few weeks ago had 2 passengers on a 48 seater aircraft.
There is no need for any more expansion at this time.

There is also the fact that The Welsh Assembly has granted Swansea Council/Air Wales over �600,000 of public funded money for improvements. This is to help a private commercial venture! Think of the other worthwile projects that this money could have funded in our area.
I hope that the expansion is stopped now as presently the situation is acceptable but if these latest planning applications are passed then I fear that the floodgates will be opened for much more ambitious expansion in the next few years.

And as for being NIMBY's then if you are not prepared to fight for the preservation of your local area in the face of potentially damaging developments then so be it. I would say that it is being community spirited. I have lived in this area all my life and like it. I do not want feel that I have to move away because of some commercial development that will spoil the amenity of our local area for ever.

I fully support the views put forward by Neil. It is obviously clear that if you do not agree with Mr Marshall, you are a "Disaffected Individual".
Mr Marshall, your letter contained so many inaccuracies and half truth's, that I would respectfully suggest that in future you do your "Homework" prior to submitting any further correspondence to the Evening Post.

Perhaps it would be useful to give a bit more information concerning how the petition SANER (Swansea Airport Needs Extra Resources) arose.

On Wednesday 4th June, an article ("Shock victory for airport fighters") appeared in the South Wales Evening Post. In discussions of this in the Village Inn, Killay, it rapidly became clear that many people did not support the approach being adopted by SANE, especially in the case of the present proposal to establish improved hangar facilities. We further learned that Local Councillors etc. had found a similar lack of support for SANE, in their attempts to determine local opinion.

Moreover, there was considerable resentment that SANE was giving a strong impression that it accurately represented views of the local community ("Most people consulted in the affected communities oppose any expansion ....."; "... an overwhelming majority of people met and spoke against any expansion ...") - quotes from the SANE website, which also features what appears to be a Boeing 747 spewing out pollution over a Gower beach - a bit over the top?!).

Having discussed the situation, we decided that it was only reasonable to give those who did not oppose the additional hangars an equal opportunity to say so. Hence, the petition was established. Its wording is "As a Swansea resident, I fully support the current proposal to improve the facilities at our airport, and express my opposition to the petition by SANE (Swansea Airport No Expansion) seeking to obstruct this development."

The petition was launched on Friday 6th June. In discussing it, we have made every effort to stress that we are not trying to change people's opinions - simply to give those who do not agree with SANE an opportunity to say so.

For information, as of yesterday evening (5 days into the petition and without the much more sophisticated facilities and resources being deployed by SANE), the number of signatories has reached 195. Quite a few people have also asked for copies of the petition to use in obtaining additional signatures. In discussions with me, only five people have so far refused to sign the petition and expressed their support for SANE. The 195 current signatories are almost all residents of the immediate area (although we do not see why those in other parts of Swansea should not also have the opportunity to state their views, had we the resources to allow them to do so!)

We will keep you advised of further developments.

INFORMATION UPDATE: Following today's returns for the SANER (Swansea Airport Needs Extra Resources) petition, as promoted by several of Killay's local shops and via forms circulated by individual local residents, the total number of signatories has risen from 195 on Tuesday to 330 on Wednesday evening. Watch this space!

I repeat what I mentioned in my earlier message.
The plans for the airport are to turn it into a regional airport. This is a much bigger operation than at present. Okay the majority of people in Swansea may think that cheap flights are great but there are consequences of this policy.
The SANER petition was started in the Village Inn. How many people on this petition have children or grandchildren in this area?
Are any of them concerned about environmental issues at all or is it simply a case of if it doesn't bother me then it isn't a problem.
Please spare a thought for the residents of Dunvant and Three Crosses.
Think about the children who attend Pen-Y-Fro junior school.
Any increase in flights will result in a greater noise nuisance as the majority of planes fly just a few hundred feet overhead.
Their concentration and attention will be affected and this is FACT. Studies of schools under flight paths show this.
They will also have to put up with the increased atmospheric pollution which will be concentrated above them.
The argument from residents in other areas of Swanesea that because the East side has lots of industrial/commercial developments then the West side should have it's fair share as well is not justified.
I personnaly was horrified ay the recent incinerator decision. I was of the opinion that the residents in that area have experienced enough bad development and could certainly do without this one.
On the other hand the redevelopment of the docks and marina should be beneficial to the immediate area.
My last point is that before it is claimed that Killay is supportive of the airport expansion everyone who lives in Upper Killay, Killay, Dunvant and Three Crosses should be shown the airports long term business plan (not piecemeal development plan) which would provide details of how much development will take place, details of the increase in flights and details of times and flight paths, new access roads that would be required. Only then can people make an informed decision on whether this expansion is favourable or not.
Lastly, there is a report in tonights Evening Post that the MD and 2 other senior people have resigned. Does this give you any confidence in their long term business planning?
Or are there other problems with the running of the airport that we still don't know about.
