Subject: NOT belt
In reply to: Greg Gisler 's message, "Engine Belts" on - Sunday - 10/23/11 - 3:53pm

SO, I was told by a friend sailing with me that day that the belt had broken, (sure sounded like it to me, and he should know). I went to the boat the next day to gather the pieces and there the belt was all in one piece right where it should be...my question now is have I screwed up my engine? There was a loud sound like a belt hitting the side of the sink enclouser right be fore it died and now no matter what I do I can't get it started, I am very familiar with diesels so this is throwing me for a loop, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Wanting to go sailing w/o a tow,
Greg

Hey Greg, sorry to hear it's not as simple as a belt. Any other signs before the clunck and the engine dying? If you don't get a lot of response here try this forum, some great folks; http://www.cruisersforum.com/ What does the engine do now? Did you notice the temp when it happened?

When you say loud noise - do you mean there was a loud noise and you turned off the engine or did it die (instantly or eventually) as when the noise appeared/ occurred?

Was the noise a quick but random "slapping" sound or more of a banging/thumping sound and if so, did that bang or thump follow the rithm of the rpm's you were running at the time?

Is there a line, rope, ribbon, hose, whatever that can have gotten caught in the pully system and wrapped itself to stop the engine?

Are all the pullies still in the right place, all bolts still on them?

Is there oil (more than usual) in the pan/ in the bilge - what color?

When you say you can't start it, do you mean it turns over but won't fire or you turn the key and there is...

1) nothing...
2) a distant "click", but nothing else happens
3) a loud click and a buzz but nothing happens (maybe some smell of electrical burning)
4) the starter whirls loudely but it doesn't turn over te engine
5) the starter clicks, engages and turns over the engine, but it just cranks and cranks..
6) Engine cranks and sputters but won't quite start up

There's a lot we can discern from our armchair positions, if we get the information to digest...

Let us hear more...
