Subject: LP tank, Wind Generator, Thru hull

Hello to all. Would love (and need) feedback on 3 subjects.

Is the original mizzen mast strong enough to support a wind generator? Seems like it would need internal blocking

There is an unusual thru hull fitting level with bottom of bilge. It does not protrude completely through the hole inside...Looks like a metal drain plug. Any help?

Lastly and most importantly. I have an idea for LP tank location....A transom platform.....I attempted to attach a couple sketches...Pros, Cons, or Questions would be greatly appreciated

I built a box for propane tanks on the port side of the mizzen. Holds two of the short tanks.
Archituthis tried a windvane on the mizzen, but they thought it was too much weight, and removed it.
Don't know about your bilge thru hull.
Mail me, I can send pictures of the propane box.

Doug, thank you for the response. Yea, I'm sceptical of that load on the mizzen.

Ive seen several versions of the LP box next to mizzen. I'm not fond of taking up the deck space.. I'm toying with the idea of a transom platform. Really interested in opinions about it. Of course as soon as I can post a good sketch of it. I'll take a picture of the thruhull also.. Thanks again!

I have two ten pounders in a plastic sealed container under the back deck to starboard of the worm steering, accessible through the steering box. The plastic container is vented through the hull on the bottom. out of the way, out of sight.

Paul, I think I might have seen a picture you posted of that set up. If so, could you post it again? Deck configuration on M32 may be inhibiting.

The box acts as a great seat, holds some spare stuff like winch handles, some lines etc. Also can lock it.

[> [> [> [> [> [> I would build a box in the cockpit under the wheel -- Ardi, - Wednesday - 04/ 4/12 - 10:28pm

I have two 1o lbs aluminum tanks that I wouldn't like to have inside(just in case it leaks) , so the best place for me would be to build a box in the cockpit under the wheel. It is out of the way, low, far from the stove, outside and would serve as an place to keep my feet on, if I sit and steer from the wormgear box .
I'm going to build a new mizzen mast, reinforced, prewired for wind generator and deck lights under the spreaders ( just in case) as well as the coaxial for the VHF.

Ardi, are you saying in the foot well?

That will be the place. I kept the tanks there during the hole trip to Fl and back tied with a line that went from inside of one lazarete to the other. There they are outside in case of leaks, easy to run a hose through the lazarete without drilling a hole( I hate drilling holes) can also build a cup holder on top of it,binaculars, handheld radio. Everything you need within easy reach. A box that will be easy removable because I don't always need them. But, they were there for the heater, because for the stove/oven I use small bottles that I refill with an adapter from the big tanks and they last several days. Propane in the boat may turn to be dangerous, not a joke. Good luck .

[> [> [> [> Too heavy for our mizzen -- Jared Kibele, - Monday - 11/12/12 - 9:55pm

What Doug said is true. We already had our radar on our mizzen (right at the spreaders) and put a Rutland 913 wind generator just above it. We took it off (described here: http://www.svarchiteuthis.com/2010/12/unplanned-stop-in-ensenada.html).

The main problem was the torque on the mast when the boat rolled. It made the mizzen twist in it's step. We'd also just restepped the mast so there was new dolphinite in the mast step that hadn't quite solidified. That probably didn't help but we took the wind generator off and the problem went away.

Despite being one of the quietest ones around, it still transmitted and fairly faint but somewhat annoying moaning sound into the cabin as well. For us, the wind generator was an expensive and unnecessary mistake.

[> LP tank, Wind Generator, Thru hull -- Brian, - Friday - 04/ 6/12 - 7:50pm

Hi,

I rebuilt the original box on the port side of the mizzen. I was not in love with the position, and was looking for a new spot. But now I am quite happy with after having it there for a while. There is plenty of cockpit space anyway, it provides another seat. I can stand in it when dealing with the mizzen and I have mounted a small sunbrella storage pouch on the aft side, for things like phones, glasses etc.

Good Luck,

Brian Gran Mariner 1973 M-36 hull #9
