Hello, my name is Giovanni Kisslinger, I live in Naples (Italy). I writed e-mail at August 15 for information about Mariner 31 in fiberglass, but I didn't receveid the answer. I would buy Azuloa (original name) but in Italy ther isen't anather. What I the check? The fiberglass is durable? Will it leave for long time? Does it have problem for osmosis? (NOW DON't have osmosis). Thank you for attention and wait for your answer. Giovanni Kisslinger

Hello Giovanni, the biggest problem you will find with Mariner's is with the original plywood. So problem areas are the decks, coach roof and sides, and the cockpit seats and well. Take a look at the Mariner Project page.
As far as price, it will depend on the restorations of the above as well as the condition of the engine.
I've never heard of a major osmosis, or delamination problem with the fiberglass hulls. Chain plates are another thing you might check. Good Luck I've owned one for 37yrs.

[> Mariners as good buys -- Randall, Murre, M31, - Tuesday - 08/27/13 - 1:35am

Hey Giovanni,

I agree with Mark's assessment.

1. Mariners are old boats by now, so you should expect issues that many an old boat of wood would have. A thorough survey is a must and you will likely encounter many or all (or more) of the issues found on the PROJECTS part of the Mariner Owners site. Know this, however, you can still sail your boat without her being perfect. I sailed Murre for a number of years though the decks were soft and the cockpit sagging. One advantage is that the fiberglass hull should be solid. To Mark's point, I've not heard of major osmosis issues either. Everything else is wood and should be regarded as suspect.

2. You should not buy this Mariner if you want a weekend boat that you don't intend to support with major amounts of love and affection. Think of your Mariner as a second wife. No, not a mistress, a second wife. Ya, I mean TWO wives. Really. She's that much work. And you may love her more. This is dangerous ground, so go with caution.
