I've got the starting battery & 2 house batteries under the starboard quarter berth in what looks to be an original holding tray. Very short cable runs and no water worries.

Jared, I would strongly recommend that you NOT put the batteries in the bilge. The reason is simple - heaven forbid you should aquire a crack in the hull somwhere (flotsam and/or jetsam), or have a through hull fail (perhaps due to stray current in the Marina) the automatic bilge pumps will stop working as soon as the batteries become submerged. Just my opinion.
