Subject: mizzen is sinking, Help!

Hello yall, I am the current steward of M36, Hull No. 10, 1973. I purchased Mariah in October, live inland on a lake in Tennessee. I have tuned my mizzen rigging several times since I purchased her, and the rigging continues to be out of tune. The rigging is only a couple of years old and has not been sailed extensively since replaced. It seems as though the mast is lower on its deck plate, it is deck steped. I can find no support for the mast under it, as the engine is directly under the mast. Has anyone found this to be a problem with their Mariner and how did you fix it? Thanks in advance, David

David, I had very similar issues on Murre years ago. As you mention, because the mizzen step is over the engine, it wasn't supported into the hull at the factory. I've sailed Murre hard and found in the first year after I got the boat that the deck and cockpit well under the mizzen were separating, especially as I cranked down on the sail in fresh breezes.

Many of us have added into-hull support directly under the mizzen on either side of the engine. None of us have done an article specifically on this issue, but if you'll check out some of the photos in my cockpit article, you'll get the general idea.

I sailed Murre as a sloop, mostly, for quite some time before I could afford this work. This is the advantage of a ketch afterall: you don't have to use all your sail to look like a proper yacht.
