Subject: Mariners as good buys
In reply to: Giovanni 's message, "Request information for Mariner 31" on - Thursday - 08/15/13 - 4:24am

Hey Giovanni,

I agree with Mark's assessment.

1. Mariners are old boats by now, so you should expect issues that many an old boat of wood would have. A thorough survey is a must and you will likely encounter many or all (or more) of the issues found on the PROJECTS part of the Mariner Owners site. Know this, however, you can still sail your boat without her being perfect. I sailed Murre for a number of years though the decks were soft and the cockpit sagging. One advantage is that the fiberglass hull should be solid. To Mark's point, I've not heard of major osmosis issues either. Everything else is wood and should be regarded as suspect.

2. You should not buy this Mariner if you want a weekend boat that you don't intend to support with major amounts of love and affection. Think of your Mariner as a second wife. No, not a mistress, a second wife. Ya, I mean TWO wives. Really. She's that much work. And you may love her more. This is dangerous ground, so go with caution.

RR
