Subject: Helm shaft/Worm gear steering lubrication? Wheel is very hard to turn

I just bought a 1968 Mariner Ketch 35 and the wheel is really hard to turn. Looks like someone had tried to grease everything by slabbing loads of grease on but it's not helping. Anyone else have this problem or know how to remedy?
Thanks

Hey Guy,
I took the worm gear assembly out and cleaned and greased it again (most of the grease was in the couple of grease cups at the bearing fittings). When I re-installed the assembly I discovered that the shim at the back where it attaches below the deck was not aligned properly which put some stress on the gear - this created resistance and made it more difficult to turn. I made new shims (teak wedges) and refastened through them to the underside of the deck. The wheel turns much easier now.

Thanks, I got it free by just working in grease into the little pressure cap things over and over.
Now to try and fix everything else on the boat..
