Subject: Rudderpost loose from steering on a 32'

The pin or bolt which connects the steering mechanism to the rudderpost needs to be replaced. The rudder swings freely. Is it a pin or a bolt? Got any advice?

Our Mariners have an Edson worm gear steering wheel system, unless you are fortunate enough to have a tiller.
You can Google Edson Worm Gear for details. Here is a pdf for the assembly. You should be able to look on your rudder post to see how the gear is attached. It is located below the helm seat.

Do you mean the attachment of the wheel shaft to the worm gear assembly or the worm gear assembly to the rudder shaft?
On my M31 the wheel shaft was attached to the worm gear assembly with two tapered pins set at 180* from one another but I replace them with machine bolts as murphy's law had the pins wiggling out at just the wrong time.
Watch the clearance of the bolts with the wheel turned all the way, I used a flat heads for clearance.
