I'm in the process of reconditioning my bowsprit on my M31, it's been removed, sanded and I am ready to varnish and fasten soon. Gitano brings up an interesting point. Although my bowsprit hasn't shown any signs of rot underneath, I may consider elevating it a bit. One concern though; Doesn't elevating it put additional stress on the Samson Posts when tip of the sprit is under tension from the forestay?

No. not really - its only 1/4" or so higher, just enough to get it off the deck. I put a block below the end of the sprit directly between two samson posts. I also installed blocking at the prow and midway section (where the deck through bolt is located.
