Subject: Mariner 31 With Rotted Decks For $5000 Good Deal?

I have come across a Mariner 31 for $5000. The decks and cockpit need replacing. I have moderate wood working skills so I can probably do most of the work myself. Is this a worthwhile project at the price? What else could I expect to find that might give me problems?

Deck and cockpit replacement on M31's are pretty common. How is the hull? the engine? the cabin top and sides? Does it come with all the rigging? I'm in a similar situation and didn't realize at the time how much work is involved.

Take a close look and role up your sleeves. This site has lots of documentation on how to get the job done.

If the masts, engine, hull, etc are ok it's a good price. However, realize that if the cockpit/decks are rotten you will probably be redoing almost the entire boat. That includes electrical and plumbing. It's not that it's that difficult a project especially if you have good woodworking skills it's the SCALE that's overwhelming. I wouldn't undertake it personally unless you have someplace to keep the boat while the rebuild is ongoing. My 32 was purchased under similar circumstances to what you're describing and if it wasn't sitting next to my house under cover I would have given up long ago. Whatever you think the project might take in time/money, double it and then add 50% for good measure. I am not kidding. At the end you will have a beautiful boat that you will know intimately and will have the satisfaction of knowing what you did and where it came from. But it's a long road from here to there :-)
