Subject: I bought a Mariner!

I did it. I finally bought a boat. Here she is: http://flickr.com/photos/kibele/sets/72157603476954341/ She's in Long Beach right now and we are going to bring her up to Moss Landing. I'm hoping to do it during the first week of January if the weather will cooperate. I plan to move onto the boat within a month or two of bringing it up. The longer term plan is to do some extended cruising in a year or so. Anyway, I'm pretty damn excited and thought I'd say hello.

Congratulations and good luck on your trip up the coast. Keep us updated on what's happening. We always like to see what others are doing with their boats.

Hi Jared,
She's a beauty--best of luck, and may you enjoy many hours of pleasure.

We bought our Mariner 31 in Moss Landing about two years ago and brought her south to Long Beach. If you do head north at this time of year, I strongly recommend radar along with GPS.

We ran blind most of the way down Big Sur and it would have been terriby dangerous without radar. Also, plan your voyage so that you arrive at each destination by daylight--this is especially important north of Santa Barbara.

Incidentally, why would you want to leave one of the best cruising grounds on the continent--our experience at ML led us to believe that venues are very limited, and while moorage is cheap, it is commonly locked in fog (don't forget to apply for compensation from the power plant)

You might want to take a look at a piece I wrote for Sailing Magazine: "So-Cal Dreaming"--(I believe it was the July issue last year) It describes the trek south in our Mariner, the former Pythias, now renamed Scandia Dream.

kindest regards,
matts

I agree about the radar and GPS. I bought a Garmin 36 mile radar and a Garmin 4208 chartplotter. I also have a handheld Garmin as backup. I'm going to install them before I leave.

I'm bringing the boat up to Moss because I work in Monterey. I agree that the channel islands and so-cal are great cruising grounds but, once ashore I'm much more fond of California north of point conception. The current plan is to live aboard in Moss Landing for a year and then take off for some extended cruising.

Hey Everyone,

My girlfriend and I brought the new boat up the coast a couple of weeks ago. I just finished posting some pictures and stuff about it. It can be found at http://squidgeek.blogspot.com It was a great trip and I'm glad to have the boat closer to home.
