Subject: M31/32 propane lockers

Curious as to what others have done for propane locker installation on their boats. Locations, equipment, challenges, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Our one tank is in a locker on top of the cockpit deck just to the port side of the mizzen mast. I think this is "factory"; at least it looks it. It takes up cockpit space, but has one big advantage: you can reach the tank valve from inside the boat by opening the main hatch and standing on the steps; so no electronic, auto-off safety device is needed.

I've toyed w/the idea of adding a second locker in the cockpit-accessible part of the ice box (for storage of a second tank, only). This would require sealing the space off from the inside and creating a vent, but it's about the right size and mostly useless as a cold box.

But Bruce, on Gitana Vela, has a set-up I really like. He's got a deck-accessible locker behind the cockpit to the starboard side of the wheel. Usually bags of room back there. You could put one on either side.

We use a regular 20# BBQ-type steel tank, which is frowned on, I know. But it's a cheap way to go. We're on the boat most weekends and so refill and exchange the tank two or more times a year, so corrosion isn't an issue. This is not a cruiser's solution because the tank company I use (Blue Rino) requires refills at their stations only, but if you sail local and can get to a Home Depot or WalMart easily, it works fine.
