Subject: Hull Numbers, new owner

Hi all!
I am considering purchasing "Journey", a 1968 Mariner 31 in Dana Point, CA. I've seen her carved beam with "Hull #3" and the "Made in Japan" plate. She "officially" measures 31' 10".

It is my understanding that each hull was individually numbered, and the MOA site has a 31' and a 32' Hull #3. What's the probability that there would be two #3's? Does anyone have an explanation? Could there be duplicate numbers from other years or other yards?

Also, before taking the plunge, does anyone have any words of wisdom? I'll be sailing mostly single-handed, mostly coastal California, for now. I've never owned a boat, just crewed for others, which is the extent of my experience. They say a ketch is an easy sail. Any books to recommend?

"Journey" has a brocade-type wall covering in the cabin. Does anyone know if this is original and/or how it could be removed for a clean painted surface?

I've read almost every page of the web site and looked at each and every M31. Seems like an enthusiastic and dedicated group of sailors. I'd be proud to join the Assoc. and fly the MOA Burgee.

Hello again, Gail.

When referring to the hull number, do you mean the number on the forward side of the main mast cross beam? (See Sea Sharp II photo on MOA site for reference.)

For corroboration, check on the back edge of the cutting board, on the under side of engine hatch coverings, etc. The hull number is often written there in pen or pencil.

Check out the cabin photos in the SALES BROCHURE of the M31 on the MOA site. One or two show the main bulkhead covered w/an antique kind of fabric. (So, it's likely original.)

Also, in the SPECIFICATIONS section and down at the bottom of the page is a line drawing of an M31 dated Feb 1968.

It certainly seems yours could be hull #3.

Hi Gail
I have a mariner 40, hull #61. I was contacted by another owner of the same hull #. I called the Coast Guard to ensure my boat wasn't stole and the numbers changed. They informed me that there were several #61's on their books. Who knows why they had multiple #'s. Maybe it was for tax reasons.

Mike,

I have an M40 as well, hull #85, not only is the number in the bow over the v-berth on a plate, but we have found the number in many different areas. Under some of the drawers, behind panels etc., along with Japanese characters in each case. At least 6 different locations with the #85 written in black marker. Not sure if this is any help or not.. good Luck
