Subject: Old deck screw removal

I'm replacing the deck on my 31. The cabin frame is OK, but removiing the plywood screws from the cabin top, sides and bow deck is taking forever. They are bronze slotted screws and of course each screw has been countersunk and filled with epoxy before being glassed over. I'm having to chip out the epoxy on each screw head, then clean the screw head slot and hopefully get enough grip on the screw to back it out. Takes forever.

Does anyone have a better idea?

Try a Dremel with a 1/8" cutting tip, works on wood plugs too. I'm using the Dremel a lot.

I have refastened several teak decks, including the cockpit teak on my M31, Gitana Vela. Do not waste time trying not to gouge the teak when extracting the 3/8" plugs and screws. Purchase yourself a good 1/2" plug cutter, and a 1/2 " counterset bit, and enlarge the holes before refastening. The old bronze screws can be extracted fairly easily by sharpening a flat head screwdriver with your high sped grinder, and then using a hammer to "set" it into the screw head slot with a couple of firm whacks. Once you get into the rhythm, it becomes therepeutic
