Yes I had one made for Murre. It's a 1 1/2" SS rod--design borrowed from Chuck of Adalente, M32. I have drawings and pictures if you want.

And Bruce is right. I am envious of his solution. Very neatly done.

Re 49er: I do have a birthday next month, but I'll only be 45. Do I really look that old? :)

An RandeLL I didn't mean to say you were an OLD 49er. I'LL just caLL you Kid, maybe Capn Kid. Bruce, I see on your boat you had to do work on your mizzen deck beam to. I'LL have a look see with my boats mizzen to. Nice updated pictures on Murre. The scary part of Shadows broken main beam is where it happened, off the lee shore of Pales Verdes, my old ship wreck hunting grounds when I was a kid, and it happened on the way back from the Mariner randezvous in 2004. By the way I thought there was interest in another mariner get together.

I need help posting my pictures. The pictures are the right size, but I don't know how to put them on the mariner web page? please send the compression post info, since I'm on line again. What about me sending the mule up to you to try it out? It's a heavy weather sail and should do good in SF. Then, if you like it you can copy it or make some modifications on your new mule? Let me know, Randell. One last thing. A tillers replacing the wheel. Can the wheel shaft come apart? There's two pins holding the two parts of the wheel shaft together, but I still can't get it apart, even with the two pins out. is there a hidden key?

Kathy, to reply to your last question. I just returned from my 31 and "yes" the wheel shaft is removable. I know as some years ago my pins fell out (as I approached a bridge of coarse). Any way you need to remove the two tapered pins that are outboard of the point were they join.There is another pin inboard of the joint but I've never had it out. The (2) to be removed are perpendicular to one another. if those are out load it up with lubricant.

Thanks Mark, for your reply. I did get the wheel out by removing the top of the wheel box and pulling the whole shaft out backwards - wheel off the shaft of course. I was sure the shaft came apart, oh well, it won't take much to screw the lid back on.

Are you removing your wheel and going to a tiller? I am considering this as I can't find a compatable pilot or self steering unit. If I go to a tiller, I can use a tiller pilot, but I hate to give up my wheel, just refinished it.
I'm running out of time too, want to depart in October.

Hi Doug, The mariner wheel is beautiful, but after 22 years ownership it's time for a change. With the tiller the boat should handle better. Also, Shadow has a Fleming Wind Vane and though you can fit a wheel drum, the tiller will be easier to setup. A tiller pilot is less expensive, and you can set up the tiller pilot to work off the vane. It was a tough decision to take out the wheel, but I'm looking forward to the direct drive of a tiller.

Thanks, I'll still have to think on this, I was thinking of a Norvane, but the owner was reluctant to sell me one. He said it would work if I used his emergency tiller and a small tiller pilot.

You might consider a Hydrovane (http://www.hydrovane.com/).

It has it's own rudder and so is independant of the boat's main rudder/wheel. I've not used one, but it looks simple and has a good reputation. Auto pilot can be hooked to it instead of the boat's rudder. It can act as an emergency rudder. Etc.

They're expensive; 5K last I checked new. Used vanes do come on the market, but every time I've called, someone snagged it ahead of me.

It took all of 10 minutes to remove the worm gear steering, I'm going to make a mock up of the flange and shaft I need to go to the tiller. The fabricater I found is very familier with the worm gear steering and said the tiller will work very well for me.
Also ordered a Norvane unit, and will have a tiller pilot as well.
Still keeping the worm gear and wheel.
