I'll take another look this afternoon but I believe my bulkhead is three layers of ply. The outer layers that look like "slats" are actually a ply material which I haven't been able to source anywhere.

Randall, After following all of your restorations I don't think you'll have any problems w/this one. On Aeolus the bulkhead is 5/8 ply on the exterior(the old one had grooves cut to resemble slats). The mahogany interior slats were glued in place and therefore unable to salvage. I reglued new to the marine ply "prior" to final installation. The bulkhead is not attached to the coaming, it attaches to a stringer that runs perpendicular below the deck elevation from the inside behind the mahogany slats, and along the perimeter @ each side and top from the outside. checkout my pics pg. #62 for some pics of her open. I still think the coamings would have to come off unless you do the bulkhead in to pieces, as the original one runs all the way to the deck edge.(Check up under the pilot berth). I did mine some 18 yrs. ago so its not that fresh but as a "heads up"; when removing the bulkhead pay particular attention to the top of the companion way hatch. Each side is diagonally "back" screwed from the top under the brass runners. I remember having a hell of a time freeing it. Good Luck
Mark

Thanks for the hints. Eighteen years seems not to have blunted your memory much!

Yes, I can see now that the bulkhead extends all the way to the hull. Hmm. Even if I did remove the shoulder, the new deck would be in the way. Will have to think about that.

Any clue how to dissassemble the bronze port? Mine is simply in place w/no apparent fasteners holding it there. I fear it is like one of my bronze dorade vents--corroded in place.

Will be on the lookout for the backscrewed fasteners at hatch level.

Thanks again,

RR
