Subject: props and rigging

My name is ben and I am just discovering this site. I have had Dream Weaver, my mariner 40, for about four years now and have been learning and becoming better at restoring an old boat, but as it is my first I still have much to learn. I am very excited to hear that their are more out there like me, and that my instincts that the mariners are strong well designed sea going boats seem to be echoed by other owners. Yes I have discoved some of the rot issues,but they no longer scare me and have them under control. While I am sure many other questions will come to mind the two I am intersted in now have to do with 1)Props and 2)Rigging.
1) Dream Weaver has a Perkins 4-107 (with some Westerbeke stuff on in it. I don't know if that is common or not) The engine has been very reliable so far and is getting much needed love. I have always tried to baby it a bit though because in some conditions(chop, strong currents) she will get a bit hot. I don't know if it is just the nature of motoring a big heavy girl or maybe the prop or maybe something all together different. The prop she has now is a 3 bladed 18" Left Handed Prop. I am wonding what props the other Mariner 40s use.
2)I am getting ready to pull the masts down and inspect, recoat, and possibley rerig Dream Weaver. The last owner put big chainplates on her. I am curios to hear what size wire you use and also if bulking up the size makes sense.

Ben,

We own Tivoli, #85. last year I put in a new Westerbeke 64A with new prop and shaft. The prop is a RH 18' X 15" and it pushes us very well in all conditions.
Im not sure if bulking up the rigging is good, she was designed for a specfic size, however, I am certainly not a Marine Engineer. I can check the sizes on tivoli this weekend and email them to you if you want. Good luck with all your work.
