Subject: Rope Halyards

Has anyone switched to all rope halyards on their boats? I am wondering what modifiations need to be done to the sheaves and to the sheave box to accomodate the change.

Have been meaning to post the same question for days as am considering a similar upgrade this winter.

I have photos and measurements for the wire sheave currently in use on Murre's main and mizzen (will get and post later in week). It's solid bronze but it's "v grooved" for the 5/32nd (or 3/16th?) wire and much too narrow to accommodate the 3/8ths line necessary for an all-rope halyard.

I've worked on the main masthead a bunch. There ain't much to the box, and as the sheave load is borne mainly by the stainless mast head fitting, and as the box would need to be enlarged only by roughly 3/16th of an inch, it “feels” like a pretty straightforward swap.

But then again, if I’m wrong, the whole thing comes crashing down…

So I’m with you … anyone else done this? :)

Last year at the sailboat show I asked the question to the right person who told me to use only rope instead of rope and wire because he said the wire is brutal on wood. So find a place where you can hook up a block single, double or triple depend on how many ropes you want to run and forget about the wire and rope thing he said. So that's what I did for mizzen mast to run the topping lift and the halyard on a doubble and I'll do the same thing for the main halyard.
Hope this will help you gentleman. So you can do it in the same way the jib and spinnaker halyard are being used. If you need to see it I could sent you pictures of how I did the one on the TAYGETA mizzen mast.

Hi Steve,
How's your project coming along? I've been so busy messing around with mules that the short end of the rope ( halyard ) gives me a bit of a kick. I'm changing the main an mizzen halyards too 3/8" Sta-Set X, which is NEW ENGLAND ROPES. I was thinking about T-900 cept for the price. The sheave boxes are already out and larger boxes being made. I hadn't thought of a double sheave, like Ardian has.
I'll be visiting sailors this weekend on a Newporter 40, that use a mule, so I'll let you all know about that elusive beast of burden.

When I had the main down to bare wood last year, it didn't look like the "box" was anything more that a vertical hole cut into spruce mast head. Are you suggesting that there's a box of a different material built into the mast head?

Can you describe? Photos?

I haven't fully stripped the mast top yet but there is definitely a metal box of some kind that the sheave rides in. At first I thought a new sheave and a router would take care of the issue but I don't think that is actually the case. BTW I have a request in at our library for an article from March 1990 Sail called "Harnessing the Mule". I hope it goes into great detail. I'll let you know when it gets here.

Hi Guys,
The sheave box is made out of bronze. They were in great shape when I took them out. A couple of taps with a punch and they were out.
With the boxes out the space measures main mast-3 1/2"x1/2". The mizzen mast -3 3/8"x 7/16".
Forgot to take pictures, sorry, but I'll get pictures when the new parts arrive. Sure hope this will be soon.
When removing the ss nuts on one of the chain plates, the nut broke. Everyone better check their chain plates.
