Subject: Shroud Tension

Does anyone know what the shroud tension should be for all of the shrouds, bobstay and whiskers?

Also, does the bow sprit need a wedge and if it does how tight should it be wedged? Should the bow spit be pefectly straight or bowed up or down. Currently about 1.5 inches as it exits the bow.

Thanks for any insight.

The Bow on the my M-40 follows the line of the boat - I rebuilt the whole thing a few years ago. I put in a larger sampson bit too. I don't have a wedge on in it? I'll look for more pics - if you want them.....

I have shetches of it if you would like to see them too.

Also, on the tension, I generally tighten until I hear a 'tone' but hitting the shroud with the blunt end of a screwdriver. They do make a device to test tension. Also, you could use a torque wrench to do an accurate measurment, I could 'dig' up the equations for that thread - I might be good info to know...

The wedge I was talking about goes under the bow sprit as it exits the bow. I hve about in inche or more space there that I could place a wedge. Someone told me once that it was needed.

I would like to see the math on the shroud tension.

Thanks

"Text Book" says the lowers should be set from 10-15% of the breaking strength of the wire and the uppers should be about 20%. See Brion Toss's Riggers Apprentice for more help there. Loos makes a nice gauge but twanging with a tool is a time-honored method. The uppers should be 1/3 chord higher in pitch.

I'd be curious if anyone has any different information for wooden masts.

Good Luck!
