In reply to: 's message, "as a casual observer, I think without preliminaries that a girl is just PAYING her way to the top. At least with preliminaries a girl has to have something that someone thinks will take her to the top. This after all is the ultimate goal for the girl, the directors and the state. Fairness is not the name of the game. Winning is. If not, then no body would be entering." on 04:10:15 02/02/04 Mon

The problem with prelims is that the USA system is based on an open call process, meaning all who enter have a fair shot at the title. (EVERYONE pays the same amount of entry fee, prelim winner's is just paid for by the director instead of a sponsor/parent, etc...) When you have prelims, you are already weeding out competition and unfortunately, comparisons ARE made and girls will NOT enter state for lack of a chance. Even though I like preliminaries and hope they continue, I feel they are BAD for the SC USA state pageant because fewer girls enter because they do not feel as if they have a chance of winning state if they have already lost to someone in a prelim. Add to that the controversy concerning MANY of the outcomes at locals, girls feel they are unfair/unethical and therefore they lose interest in participating because state is problably the same way. Bottom line, prelims are good for two people, the winner and the director.
