Subject: AMERICAN BEAUTY DEBATE

I noticed a new debate on the American Beauty board and I am curious as to what all of you think about it.

USA is considering removing the state pageants and having an "open call" for the national competition.

I am SURE it is only speculation at this time, but I do know for a FACT that USA has been considering changing the format of the show for years, so maybe this might not be so far reached.

If this change happened it would certainly have a tremendous effect in the powerhouse states of California, Texas, and South Carolina- providing opportunities for all of those dynamic runners up that could surely hold their own at the national competition. In an open call situation, it would not matter which state you were from. If you were in the top 50 that tried out, you would make the competition.

I am all for changes, but not quite certain how I feel about this. I enjoy the state competitions, and would hate to lose them. On the other hand, how many times have you walked away wondering "what the heck just happened"? Maybe this way, some of the girls (who refuse to play politics on the state level) may get their shot at the national crown...

What's your opinion?

- I agree with your comments, but feel USA cares about neither. It is about the money. The state directors are rolling in it- and I believe Trump wants a bigger piece of it. Not quite sure how the math would work out. Very interesting idea. -- Anonymous, 13:26:14 08/01/03 Fri
  - I've been thinking about that since I wrote the first post. Some state pageants take in a ton of money from contestants and prelims, but I hear their fee to USA is expensive also. There's a limit of how much a contestant could pay USA for an entry fee, and I doubt it is as much as the state pageants could. (NT) -- Anonymous, 14:01:44 08/01/03 Fri

    - GET REAL! The addition is SIMPLE. 50 Teens/50 Miss X $1000 = $100,000. Ad sales are a PHENOMINAL source of income, and I know that companies give cash cntributions to be listed as a sponsor. Even if the expenses were 50% (which they ARE NOT), I'd say $50,000 is one heck of a part time salary. Matter of a fact, where do I apply? hehe -- Anonymous, 14:54:19 08/03/03 Sun

        And you are OBVIOUSLY a director who is ashamed to admit it is a BUSINESS. It is OKAY for directors to make money. THEY SHOULD. This is NOT a charity event! It is a tremendous amount of work to produce a QUALITY show. I want them to make alot of money. I just want them to spend some of it on their winners! This would be a great idea if they would have ten or so "state like" auditions across the county. Each girl could pay their $1000 for a chance at the national pageant.       - Yes, those heavy thighs DO make a difference. FL USA has several girls that would do well if they would get their bodies in shape. Their presentations in gown are "forgivable", and their interviews are great. - I am not sure I understand what you think she should tell them. It IS a beauty pageant. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and therefore subjective. Her responsibility is to find qualified judges and have them judge FAIRLY. She does that. What more should she do to make it more fair and keep everyone happy? -- Anonymous, 12:37:09 12/04/03 Thu
