I was watching BBC in the UK this morning and they did a feature with Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd. He was promoting a sale for charity of 100 guitars from his collection(to be sold for charity) that included guitars that he had used for many famous licks that he had been associated with over the years...He produced then his Fender Stratoocastor, a 1954 model with a serial number of 0001 stamped on it...think the claim was that it was the first commercial Strat produced(probobly disputed)...catologue value $250,000.

He went on to say that it was the finest instrument that he had ever played, and depite its age he claimed it could not be bettered by modern guitars, or guitars since that early era. Suppose many of his collection will end up in Hard Rock cafe type of places or museums. I have heard a few claims over the years from UK groups of the 60s that they had the first US Srat import into the UK...the serial number stamp, if authentic, gives the guitar a strong provence. Dave Gilmour did not say where or when he aquired the guitar.
