 This is just speculation, but "American Bandstand" was in transition in late 1963- early '64, when "Sugar Shack" was high on the charts. It went from a Mon- Fri show to Saturdays only in Sept. 1963, & in Feb. 1964, the show moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles. To save money, Dick Clark asked the Trashmen to send only one member of the group to the show to perform "Surfin' Bird"! (The results can be seen at YouTube) Maybe a similar request was made to the Fireballs ("We want Jimmy Gilmer only") & they refused. Who knows? And it doesn't explain why they wouldn't appear on other shows like Ed Sullivan.
