You and I are on exactly the same wavelength.
I have also posted the same thought several times.
After all, Buddy was the HEADLINER, he needed his band to be sharp every night, both physically and in appearance.

Beyond what you astutely mentioned about Dion's story making Buddy out to be a jerk, simply flick the switch and realize it makes Dion out to be an actual jerk, in that he is saying
he was willing to take the flight and leave the Belmonts to freeze on the bus!

Of course, his false claim is that he was involved in some convoluted series of coin tosses among "the headliners". All evidence, logic and reports other than his indicate there was only ONE toss, that between Tommy and Ritchie.

So, he is deeply disrespecting Buddy, and attempting to make liars of Waylon and Tommy as well.
