You're comparing a (presumably) daily interaction with your wife to an encounter with a celebrity?
In the case of Bob Hale, he found out mere hours after he interacted with these people -- these quite famous people -- that they had died. It was international news. His interactions were still fresh in his mind, no doubt. You don't think he'd remember that long term?
I don't disagree that in some cases people's memories may have been distorted in one way or another, but to completely discredit "most" of the memories of those associated with the tour is, IMO, absurd.
Certain accounts of particular events on the tour -- particularly those at or about the Surf Ballroom show -- have been fairly unanimously deemed accurate. Do you agree with that?
