 I read an article about the vandalism, and it seems to be the work of overzealous fans, rather than any haters. Maybe I'm wrong.

Someone wrote JESUS on the statue's guitar. Others stole the tuning pegs from the statue's guitar.

So either it was done by crazed Holly fans who think he was Jesus, or by crazed Jesus fans who think his statue is a graven image.
