As some have pointed out, there really isn't a truly "complete" set of Buddy's recordings available, although in my experience an album and four "box sets" have come close to filling in all the gaps. I began my quest for a "complete" set in the 80s after reading an early version of John Goldrosen's book, probably "The Buddy Holly Story" printed in 1979, and being amazed at the quantity of unreleased recordings.

My first purchase was The Complete Buddy Holly LP set, released in 1979, which contained all commercial releases plus several interviews and undubbed songs, mostly from the "apartment tapes" recorded just prior to the Winter Dance Party tour. A great start, and just enough unreleased tracks to whet my appetite.

In 1983, the For the First Time Anywhere album was released, which was great: All undubbed tracks, mostly from 1956 sessions at Norman Petty's studio, in the best quality available at the time.

In 1995, the What You Been A-Missin bootleg CD box set with color booklet appeared, containing almost all unreleased tracks spanning Buddy's career, plus most tracks by other artists that he played on, such as "Starlight." This set, although it was an unofficial release and stole much material from Mr. Griggs and others, was revelatory in nature, and still stands as one of the best bootlegs of its kind, in my opinion.

The Purple Chick set, technically another bootleg, became available for download only in 2005, and further filled in the gaps, apparently by consolidating all known official releases and bootlegs available at the time. As has been noted, 14 years later it is no longer readily available online.

At long last, in 2009 the Not Fade Away box set was officially released, with the help of Mr. Griggs, and offered further undubbed songs that most Buddyhollics had not heard in that form, such as the Buddy & Bob tracks. It does NOT contain such tracks as the acetate demo of "Words of Love," probably due to poor sound quality. Yes, if you want to own an almost-complete set, buy this or listen online via music streaming services, as it is as close as you'll get in an official release. If you're curious about other obscure tracks, you might find them on YouTube and elsewhere.

So that's a verbose and obscure history of my personal "Buddy quest" through the years, which no doubt many here have accomplished themselves...I simply wanted to hear everything Buddy recorded, not knowing it would take years to do so. Now, if someone can do something with the purposefully scratched acetate of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget," I'll enjoy hearing that also, but I'm not holding my breath. And if anyone is holding on to tracks that no one else has heard, well, you're just greedy!
