 I'm pretty sure that's the stuff that was first bootlegged in the mid '90s and has all been officially released via the Not Fade Away set now. Could be wrong, but that's what I remember hearing from someone when I asked a similar question years ago.

As for what happened to the tapes...

Hoffman is a NOTORIOUS tape thief. The FBI have even raided his house over tape theft in the past. Certain labels (MCA/Universal among them) won't allow him to touch their master tapes because he previously had a habit of stealing them and replacing them with copies he'd made.

Honestly, the tapes are probably in his basement or something.
