Kevin Terry explains this elsewhere on the thread, but the plane's wing was the first part of the plane to hit the ground, causing the plane to cartwheel, throwing Buddy, Ritchie, and JP out of the plane. When it finally hit the barbed-wire fence it was nose down. The fuel tank was spared a lot of the impact, so it did not catch fire. Not every plane crash results in a fire.

If you're not familiar with Kevin Terry, he is a person who has done extensive research on the plane crash over many years, so you can feel free to consider anything he says about the crash to be extremely reliable information.
