I do believe that Buddy was thinking of divorcing M.E. Peggy Sue alluded to it in her book, and even though she had clearly never really been friends with M.E., I don't think she was making it up to upset M.E., which of course it did.
I have heard that Buddy had told his mom of such plans, but he just didn't get time to see things through.

Even though he was clearly hurt from the way he split up with Echo, I honestly don't believe he had any hope, or desire, to chase her and win her back. He was hurt, for sure, I think she was his real love, his first love. Heck, truth be told, I still love my first love as well. It quite often happens! If I saw she needed help, I would be right there, but not at the sacrifice of my own family, if you get my drift? But I have never considered chasing her to win her back, and anyway, I have been married for years, and she has a family too. We never see each other or anything. But you never quite get that first love out of your system...unless they treat you really bad, then, I would imagine its easier. Buddy and Echo just fizzled out as they started to head in different directions, and we know he used to drive to see her in Nebraska when she first went to College there, so he obviously loved her very much. He would definitely have held that torch for her, still.
I think he got married to M.E. in a rush. Partly, to keep up with JI Allison, as he was marrying Peggy Sue, and partly on the rebound from Echo. I think after Echo, he went a little crazy with some less 'savoury' girls, shall we say, from around Lubbock. The rebound effect, again. I also went down a similar route after I split with my first love...its just one of those things, part of getting over it and dealing with it. I know there were rumours that Buddy even fathered a child with one of the girls...the late Niki Sullivan discussed it in a tv interview, saying about them calling at a home for young and unwed mothers, and that Buddy talked to the girl through the fence for some time. Its never been revealed, but Niki was sure a baby was born, and it was a boy. Most likely put up for adoption, and never to know that his biological father was Buddy Holly.
