 I'm not sure if Jimi Hendrix is in the same category as artists who willfully and purposely, almost gleefully destroyed themselves.

From what I understand, he wasn't accustomed to the British sleeping pills which were stronger than their American counterparts. British sleeping pills were basically twice as strong as American ones. He took the number of pills he’d normally take when he should have taken half as many.

He certainly showed poor judgement allowing himself to become dependent on sleeping pills, but he wasn't a heroin or cocaine addict. Had the ambulance people handled the situation better, he might have survived.
