Regarding David Box: At age 18, he would have been old enough to join the band... Remember, Jerry Allison was still 17 when "That'll Be the Day/I'm Looking for Someone to Love" was cut, and Joe B. was what, 17/18 when he hooked up with the others, so teenaged Crickets were certainly not unheard of...

I think David Box wanted to continue his education, therefore not joining The Crickets full-time.
