Hi

I thought it would be interesting to share thoughts on best, or most cherished compilations of Buddy Holly recordings.
Whether your reason is based on overall audio quality,
exceptional artwork or other factor, such as an autograph,
your thoughts may offer the rest of us a new reason to seek our own copy.

I only ask that you do not suggest bootleg or grey market
(i.e. unauthorized) releases, as these can be very polarizing. And, since this is my submission, please don't
suggest anything with the 1980's overdubs by the picks! My blood pressure can't handle that. (I'm only partially joking!)

lastly, let's have a separate category for lengthy boxed sets, as they obviously have the advantage of a high volume of material.

My choices are: (drum roll please),

"Legend, from the original master tapes" cd edition 1986
this has to be the overall winner, due to superior first generation audio sourcing. The vinyl copy, though good, does not sparkle like the cd. This release could have had far better liner notes.

For 2 lp vinyl sets, I offer 2 U.K produced titles.
"Legend" from 1974 was the first decent sounding imported collection I was able to obtain, and It was a treat at the time to hear songs I did not yet have. "Buddy Holly Rocks" from 1985 offers a great selection and generous notes, plus a pretty cool cover design.

For a boxed set, the classic 1978 "the complete Buddy Holly", with the first edition custom labels,is a real pride and joy. So much to absorb, so much to read... I had to break several piggy banks to get this one. To augment this classic, I will suggest the addition of the 1983 U.S. lp "for the first time anywhere", as it was a treat to hear the basic, no overdubs versions of those 1956 (mostly) recordings (technically, this one is not considered to be a compilation.)
