I must STRONGLY disagree with your assessment of Albert Lee.
Everything I have heard by him is of a very "reedy" sounding
nature. I don't think he has it in him at all to play with the more muscular strident style of buddy, and even the late great Tommy Allsup had a stronger rock vibe, melodic as he was.
This of course has ALLWAYs been the problem when advocating
overdubs of Buddy's more raw recordings and demos. What one person may like will seem like finger nails on a chalkboard to many others.
The very sage John Goldrosen said it very well more than 50 years ago. The unvarnished and honest bare Holly demos sound best as originally performed by Buddy.
I agree that they should be presented in the best audio
quality that the new tech will allow, but adding "sweeteners" to the original performance, with ZERO involvement of any of Buddy's original collaborators is a HUGE attempt at a cash grab and an ego trip for those involved. We get more than enough of that garbage from youtube punters messing about in their home studios.
Some may be sightly better than others, but I think we are all fed up with the atrocities of the Picks in the 80's,
and the putrid new "string arrangements" of a few years ago.
