In addition to the Fender Custom Shop Buddy Holly Stratocaster, in the late 1990s Gibson did a run of 250 tribute "Buddy Holly" J-45s with replica 1940s-era banner headstocks and "Buddy Holly" on the truss rod cover. It's easy to find photos of the Fender CS Buddy Holly Stratocaster and the Gibson Buddy Holly J-45 online.

The "Buddy Holly" branding on the Fender and Gibson tribute guitars has significance in part because of the limited runs, and in part because some effort was made to duplicate the appearance of Buddy's original instruments, but neither guitar was intended to be a "exact" replica. For example, the Fender Custom Shop Holly Strats attempted to replicate the cracked pickup covers that appear in photos of Buddy's Stratocaster taken during the March 1958 UK tour, but the Custom Shop had to speculate about other points of wear and the exact specs of that instrument because among other things there are no known photos of the reverse side of the guitar, and it disappeared when it was stolen.

The only known, surviving Holly Stratocaster is the 1958 Strat that Buddy played during the Winter Dance Party tour and that's in the collection of the Holly Center Museum in Lubbock. Years ago, the Fender Custom Shop made a few Masterbuilt "1958 Stratocasters" that look very similar to that guitar, but they weren't intended to duplicate Buddy's WDP Strat or any other, specific instrument.

The good news, however, is that any sunburst Stratocaster, Gibson J-45 or Gibson J-200 with vintage specifications will put you well within the ballpark of the original instruments that Buddy owned and played.
